MAKE POETRY WEIRD AGAIN PRESENTS PENANCE RESIDENCY @ THE CRYPT GALLERY, LONDON.

We are very excited to announce that we will be having our first PENANCE residency at the historic Crypt gallery in London. FREE ENTRY FOR ALL.

From @nolsnathankski : "Hey lovely human 🌒 I wanted to invite you to PENANCE at the Crypt Gallery, beneath St Pancras Church, running 16–20 February 2026. As someone who’s been part of Make Poetry Weird Again, it would be really special to have you there. PENANCE is about making poems under simple constraints, being properly present together, and seeing what happens. Across the week there’ll be PENANCE sessions, open working time, and daily podcast recordings in the space. Some sessions will be small and invitation-based, others more open. It’s completely free. No pressure to perform beyond what feels right. Turning up, listening, writing, or just being there is enough. If you’re up for it, let me know which day or days might work and I’ll share more details closer to the time. Would love to share the crypt with you 🖤 Nols"

All poets that make poems under Penance conditions will have completed A poetry 'residency' and will receive an email confirmation of the same.

There will be Penance prompts for all who attend to make poems under strict rules. - No Phones - No Vapes/Smoking - No alcohol Poets can work to automatic prompts and perform them in the space to be recorded on the podcast. All poets are welcome to simply come and make poems in the space. Nols will be making podcasts with poets, artists and whoever shows up! There will be workshops and a performance event.

With details on how to book coming soon. If you are interested in attending on any date and wish to be recorded or have a great idea for making poems in a crypt. Send us a DM or email nols@makepoetryweirdagain.com.

Share this with a poet you know or just people who like making things in crypts. There is no heating in the crypt so dress appropriately!

The crypt is still the final resting place of 557 people so we must respect their presence. Hailing from Dalston, Hackney, Jean Akintoye is a London-based performance poet.

He studied the International Baccalaureate at UWC Atlantic College, and has seen print in The Looking Glass Anthology (ed.13 and 14), The Nouse and The Resonance Anthology (2025). Stylistically, Jean aims to strike a balance between the flourishes one would expect from 20th century Irish poetry, the far more disruptive overtones of modern spoken word and, perhaps, just a dash of comedy. This results in a performance style that is as elegant as it is messy, frenetic yet precise, creating a bridge between the 'old' and the 'new.

Jean talks to the poetics of sci-fi, finding poetry, the small spoken word scene in york and performs poems that cut deep.

Jean and Nols use prompts from the PENANCE workshop.

Jean can be found at the below Open Mics

POW Play On Words

Process

That Goddamn Poetry Jam

<itunes:duration>00:46:35</itunes:duration>
<itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:episode>16</itunes:episode><podcast:episode>16</podcast:episode>

<itunes:title>HOW TO PERFORM SCHEMES AS A BAD FAITH ACTOR IN A POSSIBILITY SPACE</itunes:title>
HOW TO PERFORM SCHEMES AS A BAD FAITH ACTOR IN A POSSIBILITY SPACE

Nols makes poems with Avouleance Cook (They/Them) a spoken word artist and playwright based in London.
