Tidepool Mini Episode: Nautical Science Students Test their Skills at the Nautical Skills Competition | S2, EP08

In this episode, host Kerri dives into the Nautical Skills Competition, an annual event hosted by the Master Mariners of Canada NL Division in collaboration with Fisheries and Marine Institute. This competition challenges Nautical Science and Marine Engineering students to test their maritime abilities through a series of exercises, including vessel docking in high winds, fast rescue craft operations, and emergency situations.

Joining us are two current Marine Institute students, Hayley North and Julia Young, who will share their experiences preparing and participating in the competition. We'll also hear from Nautical Skills Committee chair Eben March, who provides insights into the competition.

Eugenie chats with Dr. Paul Winger, the Director of the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR), who shares all the details about the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) / UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Fishing Technology and Fish Behavior Conference. The conference will bring together global leaders in sustainable fishing technology and provides opportunities for knowledge sharing in academic and government researchers and local/regional industry, including ocean instrumentation, gear manufacturing, and supply services.

Next, Eugenie is joined by Chris Arns, Council of Marine Professionals Project Manager, and Captain Charlene Munden of Algoma Central Corporation, to talk about the Mari-Tech Conference and Exhibition in May. Chris also highlights COMPASS' Elevate, Empower, Employ project, a marine and ocean career exploration program geared towards getting women aged 18-24 involved in the marine industry. Captain Charlene Munden shares her expierences as a women in the marine industry and gives important advice for students and women entering the workforce.

Past, Present, and Future of MI | The Marine Institute Celebrates 60 years | S1, EP05

Welcome back to WaveCast, the official podcast of the Marine Institute of Memorial University. In today's episode of WaveCast, host Eugenie Jacobsen dives into the past, present and future of the Marine Institute as we mark its 60th anniversary. On January 15th, 1964, the predecessor of the Fisheries and Marine Institue held its official opening at Memorial’s former Parade Street campus in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

Our first guest is a past employee, Margo Hanlon. Margo began with the Marine Institute, then known as the “College of Fisheries Navigation, Marine Engineering and Electronics” in 1979 when she was only 20 years old.

Next up is Rachel Forbes, a Master of Science in Fisheries Science and Technology student researching Greenland shark local abundance in the eastern Canadian Arctic using baited underwater cameras.

The Marine Institute has changed greatly since 1964 and has embraced the advancements in marine technology and education. Lastly, we are joined with Dr. Paul Brett, vice-president of Memorial University for the Fisheries and Marine Institute to talk about what we can expect for the next 60 years.

Our first guest is Kate McLeod, a 2020 graduate with a Diploma of Technology in Naval Architecture, now the student liaison officer at MI. Kate takes us through her decision to study at MI, the transition from graduation to her first job, and the fears she faced entering the workforce. Kate provides great advice for new grads and lessons learned post-grad!

Next, we dive into the world of ocean mapping with Daniel Amirault, who graduated in 2020 from the joint Diploma and Bachelors of Technology program. Currently working as a Marine Geomatics Technician with Amundsen Science, Daniel shares his journey that led him to Amundsen Science and insights into the MI Ocean Mapping program.
