Daniel Fowle founded the Gazette in 1756, much to the disdain of local authorities -- who provided Fowle with plenty of fodder to fill the pages of the Gazette as the Revolutionary War raged on. After being jailed for speaking out, Fowle doubled down on seeking truth. His spirit lives on in the family's DNA, and today, Steven uses the 8-page Gazette to call it as he sees it. Goleman tells how the topic and the need for EI is resonating louder than ever, as employers place a premium on soft skills. Key takeaways on meditation, how to stop certain people from putting you in a bad mood and the truth behind left- and right-brain science. We cover it all, in 30 minutes.

There's his new comedy tour: He sticks around so fans can get pictures. And, of course, there's food: Each time he picks up a sandwich, he brings the world a little closer together. The fact that Long Island is the scene of the crime makes it smart all the more. Our backyard, and the people who live here, deserve far better than what the news has been serving up.
Let's unpack this.
From CNN to The Atlantic, commentaries in the news over the past week have called out Long Island's news leader, Newsday, for missing this major Long Island story, which was broken by The New York Times. For those wondering why the dead tree sector carries the burden it's because historically, the news ecosystem has relied on newspapers to break the heavy stories, and looked to television and radio news to provide updates.
But the talk of how Long Island news media, as a whole, missed this story isn't accurate, because one teeny, tiny local newspaper with a print circulation reported to be 3,200, put forth a scathing editorial in its Oct. 20 issue. It begins: "This newspaper would like to endorse a Republican for US Congress in NY3 (Oyster Bay, N Hempstead, NE Queens). But the GOP nominee - George Santos - is so bizarre, unprincipled and sketchy that we cannot."
That opening paragraph from The North Shore Leader proved the kindest. The next five paragraphs detailed many of the issues for which Santos is now under investigation.
So how is it The North Shore Leader -- with a masthead boasting a total of eight staffers -- had the goods on Santos?
Maybe they paid attention to what the neighbors were saying. If word of Santos' ability to rock tall tales was long an open secret, why didn't that usher in scrutiny by the media before the election took place? Maybe the staff at The North Shore Leader paid attention to what was heard on the street instead of what was happening inside the media bubble.
Maybe it didn't occur to them that size doesn't matter. Knowledge of the subject matter, dedication, and being able to follow a story wherever it leads has nothing to do with how many people are in a newsroom or the size of a budget. It does mean the reporters need to show up to find out what's actually going on and cultivate sources, instead of making a couple of calls from home and filing a story that fulfills a preconceived notion of what supposedly happened.
Maybe they understand their role. For newsies who have forgotten, or for the newbies who have yet to be told: First and foremost, your job is to be the watchdog of government -- including elections, even those you're not interested in. You wrote this one off as being inconsequential? Lesson learned.
Maybe they haven't given up on journalism. What today's modern media landscape is teeming with is what we can no longer afford, and the headlines in the newsfeeds continue to prove it. News coverage detailing what Santos said years ago that is now believed to be false only highlights the issue at hand: Journalism needs journalists, not stenographers posing as journalists.
Despite all that, the fact is, the only way to find the editorial mentioned here is by knowing where to look. Long Island is home to some of the oldest newspapers in America, and it shows. The North Shore Leader is more than 70 years old and, like many of the local news outlets here, it uses its website to post pdfs of prior issues. This technological sin means the content is not readable by search engines and that, in this era, equates to the news being nonexistent.
And that explains how this particular piece of news escaped the attention it deserved, but it doesn't explain the lack of journalism at large.

Know her name? Probably not.
Yet, Elsie Robinson was once the most influential newspaper columnist in America and it's time her story was told. Allison Gilbert has done just that in her new book, "Listen, World! How the Intrepid Elsie Robinson Became America's Most Read Woman."
It's an inspiring tale, shared in the next 30 minutes with author Allison Gilbert and host Jaci Clement.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Allison Gilbert is the author of numerous books, including the much-anticipated first biography of American writer and syndicated newspaper columnist Elsie Robinson (1883-1956), published in 2022 by Seal Press, an imprint of Hachette Book Group. Her book, Passed and Present: Keeping Memories of Loved Ones Alive, reveals creative ways to remember family and friends we never want to forget.
To mark the 20th anniversary of 9/11, Allison is executive producer of two film projects in collaboration with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum: a documentary called, "Reporting 9/11 and Why It Still Matters,” and a 20-part series, "Women Journalists of 9/11: Their Stories.” Featured journalists include Tom Brokaw, Savannah Guthrie, the New York Times’ Maggie Haberman, NPR’s Linda Wertheimer, and 60 Minutes' correspondent and anchor Scott Pelley, and many others.

From how weather and forecasting tools have changed over the decades to the impact of hurricanes and drought on our lives and wallets, this chat culminates in the ultimate question everyone has been asking: Can this planet be saved?
Masters also provides insight on the best places to find quality information on climate change and gives the best answer we've ever heard to climate change deniers. Plus, what the news media does badly in covering extreme weather, and does the weather have a soul? This is an informative, fast-moving 30-minute listen.
ABOUT JEFF MASTERS, Ph.D.
Jeff Masters, Ph.D., worked as a hurricane scientist with the NOAA Hurricane Hunters from 1986-1990. After a near-fatal flight into category 5 Hurricane Hugo, he left the Hurricane Hunters to pursue a safer passion - earning a 1997 Ph.D. in air pollution meteorology from the University of Michigan.
In 1995, he co-founded the Weather Underground, and served as its chief meteorologist and on its Board of Directors until it was sold to the Weather Company in 2012.
Between 2005-2019, his Category 6 blog was one of the Internet's most popular and widely quoted sources of extreme weather and climate change information. (Source: Yale Climate Connections)

ESPN senior writer Tom Junod has written some of the most enduring and widely read longform journalism of the last 30 years.
He joined ESPN in 2016 and has specialized in deeply reported stories on subjects ranging from Muhammad Ali’s funeral to Tom Brady’s desire to play forever. He has been nominated for an Emmy for his work on “The Hero of Goodall Park,” an E60 Film on the ancient secrets that were revealed when a car drove on a baseball field in Maine during a Babe Ruth League game in 2018. In his most recent story for ESPN, “Untold,” he and ESPN investigative reporter Paula Lavigne spent nearly two years uncovering the horrifiic crimes of Todd Hodne, a Penn State football player who in the late 1970s terrorized State College PA and Long Island NY as a serial sexual predator.
Before coming to ESPN, Junod wrote for GQ and Esquire, where he won two National Magazine Awards and was a finalist for the award a record 11 times. For Esquire’s 75th Anniversary, the editors of the magazine selected his 9/11 story “The Falling Man’ as one of the seven top stories in Esquire’s history. in 2019, his story on beloved children’s TV host Fred Rogers, “Can You Say…Hero?,” served as the basis for the movie “A Beautiful Day in The Neighborhood,” starring Tom Hanks and Matthew Rhys.
His work has been widely anthologized in collections including The Best American Magazine Writing, the Best American Sports Writing, the Best American Political Writing, the Best American Crime Writing, and the Best American Food Writing.
He has also written for The Atlantic.
Junod has won a James Beard Award for an essay about his mother’s cooking, and is working on a memoir about his father for Doubleday. Born and raised on Long Island, he lives in Marietta, GA with his wife Janet, his daughter Nia and his pit bull Dexter.

Current events have spawned countless new conspiracy theories, focusing on the likes of COVID and QAnon. But some conspiracy theories, like who shot JFK, stand the test of time. Why? Do we blame the media or social media, or the Internet? Or, maybe, America has simply always been this crazy? These questions -- and more-- are what we tossed out to the guy Rolling Stone says is the nation's foremost expert on the topic, Joseph Uscinski. He takes us behind the headlines of news coverage, giving a firsthand account of how the news media is getting the story wrong by asking all the wrong questions.
Joseph Uscinski is Professor of Political Science at the University of Miami. He studies public opinion and mass media, with a focus on conspiracy theories. Uscinski is co-author of American Conspiracy Theories, widely considered the seminal study of conspiracy theories, and author of Conspiracy Theories: A Primer, the first textbook on the topic. Starting with a single floral shop in 1976, McCann built 1800-FLOWERS.COM into a household name, and today the company includes such notable brands as Harry & David, Cheryl's Cookies and Simply Chocolate under its umbrella. McCann talks about how the pandemic impacted operations, changed marketing and drove innovation at 1800FLOWERS.COM and brought his own career full circle. His insights and advice will prove helpful to all businesses, no matter the size. Of course, we couldn't resist throwing in a few signature Fast Chat questions, too, ranging from what he does all day to the pressure he faces when it comes time to send a gift. Take a listen and be in the know in 30(ish) minutes.
BACKGROUND
Jim McCann is a successful entrepreneur, business leader, author, media personality and philanthropist whose passion is helping people deliver smiles.
From its roots in 1976 as a single flower shop in Manhattan, NY, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM has become the world’s largest florist with annual revenues that exceed $2 billion. In the process, McCann changed the way flowers and other gifts are marketed for birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and special occasions while helping to expand the definition of retailing and ecommerce, positioning his company to help customers express themselves and connect with the important people in their lives.
In addition to being the first company to have its 800-telephone number as its name – a marketing insight that helped solidify the brand in consumer’s minds – McCann was a pioneer in ecommerce, being one of the very first to seize upon the enormous reach of the internet as early as 1991. Today, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM is a leading provider of gifts designed to help customers express, celebrate and connect. His company’s ecommerce business features an all-star family of brands including:
1-800-FLOWERS.COM®, 1-800-BASKETS.com®, Cheryl’s Cookies®, Harry & David®, Shari’s Berries®, PersonalizationMall.com®, FruitBouquets.com®, Moose Munch®, The Popcorn Factory®, Wolferman’s Bakery®, Stock Yards®, Simply Chocolate®, Vital Choice Seafoods® Alice’s Table®, BloomNet®, NapcoSM and DesignPac Gifts, LLC. 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Inc. was recognized among the top 5 on the National Retail Federation’s 2021 Hot 25 Retailers list, which ranks the nation’s fastest-growing retailers.

In this fast-moving Fast Chat, we cover the timely -- what's up with CNN, the Cable News Network Williams' helped create -- and the timeless -- just what is news, anyway? Is local news dead?
Williams recently stepped down as anchor of NJTV News, a Public Media station devoted to telling stories of import to New Jersey residents, capping a news career that began local — at NBC New York and WPIX — to becoming one of the highest-ranking female executives in American television. A primary architect behind the design of the first worldwide television network, Williams oversaw the construction of CNN’s New York bureau and served as principal anchor and Vice President in charge of the New York bureau. From there, she went on to NBC News, where she was an anchor of the news team that won a national Emmy Award for its coverage of the fall of communism.
